Omaha Adult Entertainment: Review: The Killer Inside Me
Lou Ford beats women, kills and sets up for killing those who cross him or interfere with his plans. So it is no surprise that director Michael Winterbottom’s cinematic version of Thompson’s book is often brutal and difficult to watch.
But that’s also why “The Killer Inside Me” stands with “The Grifters” as the best adaptation of Thompson’s work. Thompson attended the University of Nebraska and published short stories in “Prairie Schooner.”
Ford is played by Casey Affleck, who gives a disturbingly placid performance. He makes the brutality and manipulation as natural as his constant coffee drinking and cigarette smoking.
The story, set in the late 1940s, opens with Ford being sent to a bungalow outside of town, where Joyce Lakeland (Jessica Alba) is welcoming paying visitors. Sent there to warn her off the prostitution trade, Ford pushes her too hard; she slaps him, he hits her back and then begins beating her with his belt.
