State finds way to make people pay
LINCOLN — In medieval times, lawbreakers spent days locked in wooden stocks as a form of public humiliation.
In more recent years, cities such as Denver and Kansas City, Mo., published photographs of men convicted of soliciting prostitutes to bring contempt on them. Some Omaha neighborhoods have used billboards to name those convicted of prostitution-related offenses.
Deadbeats who don’t pay their child support face similar embarrassment in places like Phoenix.
Now the State of Nebraska wants to build an Internet “wall of shame” for tax cheats.
It will be a shamefully big wall.
Hundreds of people are listed as owing the state more than $20,000 each in delinquent taxes, officials said, and some have been in arrears for up to 20 years.
